Rochester Wedding Photographer | Renee Julia bio picture

Welcome!

Renée, here. I'm a wedding photographer based in Rochester, NY, specializing in weddings and engagements in the Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and Finger Lakes regions. This is my blog. For me, this blog is an online scrapbook. It’s a collection of client images, visual stories, personal maunderings, daily encounters, and a great place to post the endless photographs I take of my pug, Paige Marie and my daughter, Stephanie Lyn. For you, it’s a chance to get to know me, to be amused, to be inspired and, more importantly, to know who I am before you even meet me.

A Note about Facebook Messages and Wall Posts

To all my clients, if you need to send me a message, please use standard email to send it instead of using Facebook mail or my Facebook wall. There are issues with Facebook where we have had messages that have never arrived to the party they were sent to or simply have not shown up in the recipient's inbox until several days after they were sent. It simply isn't a reliable tool for business communications.

Rochester Photographer | Mmmm, Donuts!

Since I got so many positive responses to cupcakes yesterday, how do you all feel about donuts?
For full disclosure, the coffee was from Donuts Delite; however, due to reasons involving Stephanie’s strict pink-rainbow-jimmies-donuts-only policy, the donuts are courtesy of Dunkin Donuts because, like America, that’s what Stephanie runs on… that and Red Bull.

And, all the photos you have seen here for the last several posts have been taken with my old Canon 20D and my old 50mm f/1.4. They are part of my “walk-around bag,” if you will.

Stacy - OMG Renee, that looks soooo good!!! Love the way the heat is swirling out of the cup of coffee, wonderful capture!

Mia - You are such a tempter!! Gosh. Looks... mmmmm!

Rose - Why do you... :D Love the pinkness! Goodies, you keep tempting us, and that is not fair! But keep posting, please! And I'll get the virtual sugar rush.

Rochester Photographer | Mmmmm, Cupcakes!

Stacy - OMG Renee, these are stunnnnnnning shots!!! Oh my, those cupcakes look sooooooosooooo yums! Great captures!!!

Renee - They tasted just at good as they looked, too!

Stacy - I will then have try those cupcakes the next time I visit Rochester!!!! :)

Oleg - Bokeh is fantastic! Great shots! In vertical picture with raspberry did you focus on fork intentionally? How do you focus? With central point and recompose or with all points or with outer point? When camera is focusing with all points, it selects the points on object which are closest to camera. Do you let camera to select the focusing points?

Dana - OMG, these look delightful! You can even see the raspberry hair!

Steve Lig - Ooh! Yummy!! I’m stuck with a crummy chocolate chip cookie!! :-)

Rose - Oh no! You didn't! You just post cupcakes photos!! :D Dying in here! :)) Such beautiful yummy delicious little things! Were they as good as they look? YES, you said yes, but say it again! :))

Mia - Wow! :) Beautiful pictures, that make me want to taste them! Oh gosh yummy!! If you like cupcakes, may I suggest a Swedish photographer who has a photoblog just like you, and who is amazingly skilled at making cupcakes too - which she of course photographs and puts up on her blog? Her blog is in Swedish but she doesn't write much text, so it's enough to see her photos. (She also has the cutest Chihuahua ever! Her most frequent model! :) ) http://www.blixman.se And for her cupcakes only: http://blixman.blogg.se/category/cupcakes.html

afv - OMG! oh so sinful and yet I could devour them without guilt!!

Michelle Kane - Oooh, I have such an affinity for cupcakes. These make me want to go bake and decorate. mmm mmmm good!

Sean - Oh my goodness, why did I have to see these this morning. Jeeeaaalous. Beautiful photography though! Ha!

Rochester Pet Photography | Doozer

Before you get all crazy and think I went and got me another pug, let me explain. This is not a pug. This is Doozer and he is a “Frenchie,” that’s slang for a French Bull Dog. And people who have Frenchies do not like their pooches mistaken for pugs (I can point you to a few blogs that make that abundantly clear). Neither breed is better than the other—they’re just different. But the one thing that they have in common is that their personalities are bigger than their bodies. That I love. How cute is this guy?

From the Archives

This photo goes back to a very dark time in my life: Spring Break 2009. Seven days, two-thousand dollars, 1,008 miles, one cottage, two teenagers, zero relaxation, and innumerable feral cats. Ahhh, Savannah, Georgia.

Renee - Aren't his eyes amazing? He was the only one of all the cats that wasn't scared. And he was so tiny.

Rose - Oh gotta loooove the cats! :D Stunning image. Such a fierce kitty!

Pat - Oh my, the eyes are truly amazing, as are the various colors and textures in the wood.

Cindy S - i'm not a cat fan, never have been. I LOVE dogs! But this is a lovely pic.... very cool eyes.

kathy - those eyes can certainly tell a story!

Mia - Aaaw what a beautiful cat!! I'll take care of him/her! You can come home with me. Amazing eyes. And such beautiful colouring too.

johnny - It's perfect, I love it !!!!!! beautiful eye color!!

QIG: Questions I Get #2

I’m writing a QIG.
From bed.
Late at night.
A pug to my right, flat diet soda to my left, and Cinema Bizarre in my headphones.

For a while I was actually keeping track of who asked what questions, and I was going to be all polite like and directly address the parties by name, but I can’t see the point in that… mostly because I kept the questions and lost the names. If you know me, I obsess over micro-organization, get excited about it, and then abandon it. Onwards…

What camera do you use?
I currently shoot with a Canon 5D and a Canon 5D MKII.

Why do you shoot Canon?
Truth be told, I ended up with Canon because when I was ready to buy my first D-SLR, it happened to be at my wholesale club on sale, and it happened to be a Canon, not a Nikon. If it were a Nikon D40 that was available on that fateful day, we’d be talking about Nikon right now. Why do I stay with Canon? We have bonded ;-)

What is the main lens you shoot with?
The lens that I shoot with most is the 50mm f/1.2L. I tend to favor it for a variety of reasons, none of which I really understand. It’s like the wayward child of lenses in my bag: it misbehaves, it’s not all that reliable, and it seems to have a mind of its own. But when it behaves, it’s oh so good. I think it’s a challenge that I enjoy.

What is your favorite lens?
Hands down the 85mm f/1.2L. It’s like the well-behaved big brother of the 50mm. It makes the world a better place and tells you how pretty you are.

I don’t have a lot of money, but I want to buy a better lens. What should I get?
I think the 50mm f/1.4 rocks. I still have it and I recommend it over and over again. If I lost it all and had to start over again, it’s the first lens that I would re-buy.

Do you use Lightroom and what settings do you use?
Nope. I use Apple Aperture and I don’t speak a lick of Lightroom.

Do you use actions? Which actions?
I do not routinely use actions. The only ones I use are the Jesh de Rox ColorShift actions. And even those I only use for certain things and sparingly, and not on portraits. I adjust all my levels/curves manually in Aperture.

Does your cat have a missing ear?
Yes. Legend has it that Rusti was involved in an unfortunate rumble with a woodchuck many moons ago.

Questions? Thoughts? Leave a comment or use my contact form. Can’t put my email here because of the spam demons.

Okay, that’s all for now. And since I know you come here for pictures, I’ll leave you with some vintage Stephanie (circa summer 2009).

cecil - I Benefit from the post Thanks

Stacy - Wonderful read! I too love the 50mm 1.4 lots! I look forward to upgrading it to the 50mm 1.2 someday soon! Beautiful portrait of Stephanie!

Kate S - hey you still didnt tell me how you get skin so smoothe and you promised hahaha

Renee - @Kate I did promise. I think I left out a few questions by accident. I'll save them for next time... someone remind me.

Renee - @Stacy you will love it. :-)

Renee - @Cecil glad you liked :-)

Christine P - That is a gorgeous shot of Stephanie!! :) I hear you on the 50L!!! It is an attn seeking child of mine... sometimes naughty, sometimes nice. My goal this year is to use my 85L more often!!! :) Awesome post, thank you for sharing! :)

Cindy S - love the qiq and I am a canon girl too for many of the same reasons! xoxo

kathy - I agree about the micro-organizing! I do the same thing. Yes, folks, His Hugh-ness does have one mangled ear but that is what makes his bad ass so...badassssss...

Zoe Berkovic - Gorgeous! Just gorgeous!
